Fees

Most of you have paid all your registration fees on week one which is amazing!

A few teams did not.  If people have paid their $20 BCA registration fee through another league, please write that in the notes section of the score sheet.  Reminder that everyone who hasn’t already paid BCA registration (either on week 1 or through another league) owes a $20 registration fee.

Additionally, our league has a $40 per team registration fee, and $40 per team weekly dues.  As such, most people should have put in $40 on week 1 and will pay $10 per week after.  As a reminder, on the standings page the last column is Owed Dues, however it doesn’t include BCA Registration fees.

Tuesday is an 8 week season (9 weeks but 1 bye), so $40/week * 8 weeks is $320, + $40 registration is a total of $360 in dues (not including BCA)

Wednesday is a 7 week season, so $40/week * 7 is $280, + $40 registration is a total of $320 in dues (not including BCA)

Whatever money gets turned in each week is subtracted from those starting figures.

You can check this link to see if you’ve paid your BCA Fee through our league.  If you are marked as a 0 on that list but have paid through another league, please let me know at djmichaelbasic@gmail.com that you’ve done so, so I can update the list.

Things To Know For The 2022 Mini Season

Hello Westside 8 Ball League!

We are finally ready to get back to playing pool.  Our 2022 mini season will start March 1st & 2nd and run 9 weeks on Tuesday/7 weeks on Wednesday.  We will qualify for BCA and get back into the swing of things and be ready for a full 2022-2023 season to start at our normal time in September 2022.

Here are some important notes.  Please read them all, it’s all important info!

Due to the shortened season, we are cutting the team registration fee from $80 to $40 for this season only.  This does not include the BCA Registration fee which is $20 per player.  As such, Week 1 Dues are $40 per player, which includes $10 in registration, $10 in weekly dues, and $20 for BCA registration.  All subsequent weeks of play require $10 in weekly dues per player.

We will try to be as COVID safe as possible.  We will have a zero tolerance policy for any sort of COVID shaming.  Bars will be following local guidelines, but if mask mandates are lifted and someone wants to wear a mask, let them.  If they don’t want to shake your hand, it’s not bad sportsmanship, let them be.  Please do not harass anyone for their safety choices.  Erring on the side of caution doesn’t adversely effect anyone else.

As of right now, 90 west is the only scoresheet dropoff location.  We are trying to secure a second location, so watch for updates.  Scoresheets MUST be turned in on the night of play. Reminder that the visiting team is responsible for turning in both scoresheets, and BOTH teams are responsible for making sure that an image of the scoresheet is sent to Mike Schwartz as soon as the match is finished.  We’d rather have both teams send an image than neither, so after the match, as you’re both signing the sheets and turning in the money, get that picture taken and sent immediately.

Please look over the schedule and make sure there aren’t any oddities.  Each team should play every other team one time.

The officers are also cutting their stipend in half for this season so that more money goes to the prize pool at the end, even though Pete and Angela have arguably worked harder this season to make the league happen than ever before.  The only extra cost is the website hosting fees that Mike Schwartz has been paying the entire pandemic, but we will work out the numbers and probably put those fees off until next season so that the prize pool isn’t heavily affected.

We are looking forward to a fun season and a chance to play pool again after all this time, so be good spots and enjoy yourselves!

Signups for the 2021-2022 Season

First, apologies for the lack of updates here.

The league start date has not been set yet, however, we are looking at mid october to see what happens with COVID-19 as schools re-open.  This will give us time to figure out what bars will be open and available to us, and what protocols will be.

Here is the link to sign up your team.  Before choosing a home bar, please confirm with the venue that it is still open and available to host our league on your preferred night of play.

We look forward to resuming the league as soon as safely possible!

Payouts Are Ready For Pickup

The payouts have been sorted and are ready for pickup.  Please, team captains only, text or email Mike (the same phone number or email address you use to send in your score sheet images each week) to set up a pickup time.  Pickups will be done by captains from Mike’s front porch.  He will wear gloves and a mask so everything will be safe for you.  COVID19 can survive on paper money for up to 4 days, so if you are worried, wait until Monday the 11th to pick your envelope up.

Below are the final payout charts.  As previously discussed, Tuesday’s breakdown is $5/win for the top 5 teams and $4/win for the bottom 9, while Wednesday’s is $4/win for the top 4 teams and $3.50/win for the bottom 7.

For anyone interested in the thought process behind these numbers, continue reading.

If you look at the standings, 5 teams on Tuesday and 4 teams on Wednesday are an obvious and natural cutoff.  On Tuesday, with 5 weeks remaining in the season, the top 5 spots are all very much in play.  When a season can’t be completed, even though all teams stop at the same number of games, the difficulty of the schedules is different for each team.  Since our league designs the season so that everyone has the same overall degree of difficulty, an unfinished season doesn’t represent a balanced place determination, so paying out per place as we usually do doesn’t make much sense.  That said, with clear frontrunners, it does make sense to give a bonus to the natural top tiers on each night.

The way we normally do payouts is, we take the total that is paid into the league, and from there we pay out $2.50 per win which accounts for half of what the league takes in.  From there, we subtract any expenses (cost of hosting the website, officer payments, supplies, printing, etc.) and then pay out extras at $5/8 ball break, $5/table run, $2/secondary table run and $2/honor roll.  Once all that money has been accounted for, everything thats left normally goes into the prize fund.  The prize fund is split up based on each teams place according to payout curves which can be found by clicking here.

For this year, instead of applying the prize fund to place pay, we added it to the per win pay, which is how we came to the $5/$4 Tuesday and $4/$3.50 Wednesday splits.  The reasons for the difference from Tuesday to Wednesday include less teams, less weeks of play, and a bye.  All these things mean that less money is paid in on Wednesday, thus, the prize fund is smaller which makes sense and balances out.

The officers did not come to this decision lightly and realize that there is no perfect solution to our unprecedented situation.  With Wednesday, due to the byes, not all teams played the same number of games, however, the teams with more games also paid in more, which makes paying per win the only fair way to do things.  While this wasn’t an issue on Tuesday, there was still a discrepancy in difficulty, which we feel we addressed with our solution.

As always, if anybody has any questions about any of the above information, please feel free to reach out to us.  Mike Schwartz is deeply familiar with all the numbers and is happy to discuss them, and all the officers are happy to discuss anything else league related.

We don’t have any knowledge about when the world will open up again, but as soon as we’re able to put a new season together, we’ll discuss options to do so.  We hope you’ll join us again next season, whenever that ends up being.

League Play Postponed

With all bars closed for the time being, league will definitely not start on March 31st.  As of now, all matches are on hold until we have a better understanding of when venues will be allowed to open again.  We’ll make an announcement about the schedule when we have some information to go by, so for now, hang tight and stay healthy.
